"URL to video" means you paste a link and get a video back. The tool reads the page, pulls out the words and images that matter, and builds scenes from them. Done well, it saves you a blank-canvas afternoon. Done badly, you get a slideshow of your hero image with a voiceover reading your headline.

This guide explains what happens to your link, which page to paste, and how to get from the first cut to something you'd post on launch day.

> **The short version:** paste a public page with a clear headline and real product images, add two or three screenshots of your best screens, pick a style, then rewrite any line that sounds generic before you export.

## What a URL to video tool reads from your page

Most tools look for the same things a person skimming your page would notice first:

| From the page | What it becomes |
| --- | --- |
| Product name and tagline | Opening and closing titles |
| Headline and feature lines | On-screen copy for each scene |
| Brand colour | Backgrounds, highlights and buttons |
| Fonts | Titles, when the font is a common web font |
| Logo and images | Intro, end card and product shots |

What it usually can't read: anything behind a login, text drawn inside images, and content that only appears after scripts run or after a click. If your product lives behind sign-in, the page alone won't show it. Add screenshots.

## Which link to paste

- **Your homepage** for a general launch video. It has your name, your one-line pitch and usually your best screenshot.
- **A feature or changelog page** for a feature announcement. The video stays on that one feature instead of your whole product.
- **A product page** for a store ad. See [how to turn a product page into a product ad](https://filmagic.app/product-url-to-video).
- **A landing page from a campaign** for a paid social ad. It already has the angle you're selling.

Avoid pages that are mostly navigation, pricing tables or long blog posts. They give the tool a lot of words and little to show.

## Two kinds of URL to video

There are two quite different results sold under the same name:

1. **Narrated explainers.** The page becomes a script, read by a voice or an AI presenter over stock footage or your images. Good for blog posts and training content.
2. **Product trailers.** Your real screens, your brand colours, short lines on screen and a cut timed to music. Good for launches, feature drops and homepage loops.

Filmagic makes the second kind. If you want a talking head, a presenter tool is the better fit.

## How to make the first cut better

The first cut is a draft. These four edits do most of the work:

1. **Swap in your best screens.** The image the tool found on your page is often a hero illustration. A real screenshot of the product doing its job is stronger.
2. **Cut every line to under eight words.** Viewers read on-screen text in a second or two. "Invoices that chase themselves" beats a full sentence.
3. **Keep one idea per scene.** If a scene needs two lines to make sense, split it or drop one.
4. **End on one action.** Your address and one call to action, alone on screen.

## Sizes to export

| Where it goes | Shape |
| --- | --- |
| Product Hunt, YouTube, your homepage | 16:9 |
| X and LinkedIn feeds | 16:9 or 1:1 |
| Reels, TikTok and Shorts | 9:16 |

Make one edit and export each shape from it. See [launch video length by platform](https://filmagic.app/blog/launch-video-length-by-platform) for how long each one should run.

## Try it with your own link

On [Filmagic](https://filmagic.app/url-to-video), paste your product URL. It reads your name, lines, colours, fonts and images, writes a storyboard, and cuts it to music. Every line, image and scene is editable, and you can export 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 from one edit. Building and previewing is free with no account.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is URL to video the same as downloading a video from a link?

No. A URL to video tool makes a new video from a web page. Downloaders save an existing video from a site, which is a different thing.

### Why does my video look thin?

The page probably didn't give the tool much to work with: little text, images drawn by scripts, or content behind a login. Add two or three screenshots or a short screen recording and rebuild.

### Can I use a competitor's page?

Use pages and images you have the right to use. A URL to video tool reads whatever you give it, so point it at your own product.

### How long should the video be?

20 to 30 seconds for a launch post, a little longer for a Product Hunt gallery, and about 15 to 20 seconds for Reels and TikTok.
